"Form
follows function-that has been misunderstood. Form and function should
be one, joined in a spiritual union."
-Frank Lloyd Wright
We
started in 1973 in a dirt floor garage in the Ojai Valley of California,
making custom cabinetry, doors, and furniture for patient connoisseurs.
My goal has always been to produce useful, hand crafted products of
exceptional quality. In 1983, I studied with master furniture maker
James Krenov.
His focus on careful material selection,
thoughtful detail and proportion, and the personal journey in
each piece. His influence enhanced my craft, and refined my design
sense. After ten years experience doing on site finish carpentry and
shop cabinetry, I refocused the company. To accommodate the
sophistication of the projects we were being asked to do we required a
larger studio with the ability to produce our own millwork. We are now
located in downtown Santa Paula, California, in a six thousand square
foot facility. My staff includes gifted artisans who have worked with me
for years. We work within a process that allows the client to become
directly involved in the design and details of their project.
I feel that
each project we create should show the fingerprint of the woodwright in
process, not telltale signs of machining and assembly line production.
We often use hand planes on our finished surfaces. In order to
supplement our material supply we mill local indigenous and exotic woods
that would have ended up in a landfill or a fireplace. Besides
conserving resources we get unusual materials that are unavailable
anywhere else. Whenever possible we choose to use recycled or
sustainable yield solid woods and recycled composite panel materials.
We choose only the best materials and honest construction
methods. Although we have expanded our shop and the volume of our
business, we are still a small company of skilled craftsmen who take
great pride in making one-of-a-kind pieces of functional art.
Our reputation has led to the commissioning of our work not only
in Southern California, but also in homes and businesses in San
Francisco, New York, Ireland, Japan, and Germany.
